Mortgage Truths is an excellent resource for all homebuyers, whether they’re looking for their first home or buying their tenth property to rent. The author, Ernest Wood, presents the realities of brokers, mortgages, and the processes that you have to go through in simple language with gentle humor to keep you interested. Each chapter is a wealth of information; this is definitely a book you can read again and again.

He explains the differences between a bank and a broker, and how each can play a part in your home-buying experience. He discusses credit, credit ratings, and how they affect your mortgage rate. This information is presented in an extremely friendly, simple way; and as a former credit union employee, I was delighted to see it. The author goes into great detail about the intricate world of points and touches on how to avoid the wrong broker, one who doesn’t ask questions or who is only in it for his commission.

In each chapter, he discusses a different part of the mortgage process and the pitfalls that the unwary can run into in each area. It is not the most fascinating read; but it’s one of the most educational, enlightening, and useful reads I’ve run across in a long time! This book definitely will help out anyone who is looking for a mortgage to avoid making expensive mistakes while getting his new home.

Mortgage Truths is a deep book full of excellent examples, real-world knowledge, and in-depth information. The author seeks to educate individuals on a complicated and often misunderstood area, and I think he succeeds well. He injects gentle humor into his book to keep from sounding didactic and uses his examples in a useful, easy to understand way.

The book’s strengths definitely reside in the author’s ability to use simple language to explain complex mortgage jargon. He discusses the various types of mortgage, the many people involved in getting you a mortgage, and explains each in detail without sounding like a monotone professor. His ability to weave humor into his work, his willingness to bring numbers -- real numbers! -- into his hypothetical examples, and his willingness to re-explain things he’s gone over before all make this a very strong, well-written, helpful book. If you read it, it’ll be one you’ll want to hang on to for life.

Mortgage Truths is one book I think everyone should read at least once. It more than succeeds at its goal to educate and uncloud the mystery of the mortgage. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
