Price: $9.95 | Tango Zen is a lighthearted look at the meditation practices espoused by Buddhists and how you can develop that meditative state through the dance known as Tango. There is an excellent explanation of sitting zazen and an equally intriguing description of Tango and how that dance was developed. The author describes how you can stretch, learn a few exercises to help your development of the Tango Zen state, and also gives many inspirational quotes that help show how dance is a wonderful way to express your freedom, your emotions, and yourself more fully. Unfortunately, he does not describe the actual steps to the Tango itself, rather focusing on the connection between the two dancers and the meditative state that can be reached through dancing with a partner. This is an excellent beginning for anyone who wants to learn more about both Zen meditation and Tango, though.
Tango Zen is a fairly straightforward book with lush quotes and a practical outlook that gives readers the feeling that they are dancing already. It shows rather than tells the reader how Tango can help you reach a meditative state that can be shared with a partner. It is an excellent learning tool.
The book’s strength lies in its subject matter. It is easy to tell that the author loves to Tango and finds a great deal of peace in the Zen meditation he combines with the dance. The quotes he includes, from sources as varied as Nietzsche and the Buddha himself, all add to the depth of the book and give it a song-like texture. The pictures scattered throughout the book also add to its texture and show various people enjoying the dance. It is an intimate portrait of the dancers and definitely inspires a longing to experience the same.
Tango Zen will appeal to anyone intrigued by the inspirational and relaxing practices of meditation and anyone who loves to dance. This book rates 3 of 5 stars, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for something new to try to relieve stress. | | |
