The Newfie Ghost has five main characters: Lissa; her father, Rick; his coworker, Pete Sarsfield; Pete's son, Patrick; and the Newfie Ghost.

Lissa is a 15-year-old girl with solid artistic talent. Her parents were divorced, her mother had recently remarried, and Rick has a job as lighthouse keeper on the island of Baccalieu off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. He asks Lissa to spend two weeks with him, hoping to get reacquainted with her. When Lissa arrives, a storm is raging; and she helps her father with the lighthouse. The Sarsfields arrive on the island, and Lissa meets Patrick. And she meets the resident ghost.

The ghost introduces herself to Lissa via a picture that Lissa is sketching. Lissa blacks out while drawing. When she comes to, a young girl appears in the picture. She asks Rick and Pete about the girl, but they don't believe that there is a ghost. Patrick says he doesn't believe either, but Lissa wonders if that's true. As the days pass, the ghost becomes more aggressive and tries to take over Lissa's body. With some detective work and the long-distance help of her friend Heather, Lissa finds out who the girl was and why the haunting is taking place. But she still has to escape the ghost.

To me, there are two types of mysteries: those with detailed accounts of blood and guts and those without. Lucky for me, this book is in the latter category. The story is clean, easy to follow, and still can put you on the edge of your seat. Even though I'm not a young adult (and haven't been for a while!), I like the way the authors depict Lissa: confused by her long-absent father, somewhat excited about her vacation, smitten with Patrick, and curious about the spirit that haunts her.

The Newfie Ghost is a book that can appeal to various ages of readers - try it and see!
