Thirteen-year-old Jeanne Tucker is wary of the new kids on the block -- twins Peter and Jody Burns -- just as she is discrete with everyone else. She knows how to hide her ability to read feelings. Still, she is surprised to see the siblings near the haunted tree. Jeanne talks with Peter, but something weird occurs and they fall through the tree.

They quickly realize they are no longer near their home, as the nearby town is gone and a drake flies in the sky. They soon meet Graylod, who explains that the tree is the guardian of all the doors to the human realms. Three evil witches curse his land; yet he believes somehow the haunted tree selected Jeanne and Peter to save the people, even if he cannot fathom how two human teens could accomplish that feat. Thus, the dangerous adventure begins for the two dimensional travelers.

The Crystal Throne is an exciting young adult fantasy tale that will remind readers of early Norton and the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The storyline is enjoyable as the two intrepid heroes battle impossible odds to try to save a realm while seeking a passage through the haunted tree to their home. Kathryn Sullivan demonstrates her abilities as a first rate storyteller with this fabulous teen fantasy adventure.

Winner of the Eppie Award, 2002 - Best Fantasy
