This is a very different kind of a novel. Oftentimes as I progressed through the book, gradually tuning in with the main character and his way of life, a deep sense of nameless nostalgia pushed me on through the pages. Without realizing it, I was immersed into a new world of gentle apprehensions and insecurities of the most polished kind.

What made it into a really good read was the writer's ability to subtly "zoom back" and galvanize the scenes with almost esoteric images of place and time, making you participate in the characters' lives and concerns as they carved out a life in dangerous and passionate times.

I much admire Mr. Baily's talent of smoothly blending the inner turmoil of his character with the world surrounding him, thus creating a narrow path where heart and soul join forces, guiding the character through his precarious actions toward self-discovery -- defining a purpose for his life -- daunting challenge for Garry, the main character, as he is caught, on several occasions, between rocks and hard places juggled by his conscience.

The author managed to seize "ordinary" events in people's lives and, filtering them through his sensitive mind, managed to turn them into powerful, real life characters bustling with passion and good-natured humour. The complicated romantic entanglements, draining at times the character's energy, charmed and touched the reader.
