The Calico Buffalo is a very delightful fable of love and acceptance written in verse form for children. The story opens in a far distant place when the chief of the Buffalo has a son who, although otherwise perfect, has calico coloring. The Chief Buffalo and his wife are grief-stricken. They are sure the tribe will never accept their little one. So they resort to a deception. They cover their son with mud to hide his blotches and spots. Of course this only works for a short time.
When they are found out, the tribe is stunned and horrified. Some want to cast out the little one. Others don't know what to think. There is no precedent for this type of thing. So the elders of the tribe decide to embark on a long journey to seek out the advice of the Ancient One. Legend has it that the Ancient One was brought forth from the earth in a mysterious way and is the first of the Buffalo race. She is also the source of all law.
The Calico Buffalo is a well-written and well-illustrated tale that will not only delight and entertain small children but will also teach valuable lessons of tolerance and acceptance.
