As a child I sat before the fire and listened to my mother as she told of her trip to the South Pacific with her two brothers on one of the last tramp steamers out of Hawaii. And while in Tahiti, my uncles married. So I have family there and I have always had a dream of visiting,

Reading this like a traveler jumping from section to section, page to page, checking travel means, money, hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites, I learned a lot. I appreciated the small and large blocks of information set off from the main text. There are excellent maps, good photos and drawing, plus Internet sites to check out before you leave home.

Now reading from front to back is different. I like history, historical events, government, and personages. I like the bits about climate, geography, religion, flora, and fauna. And it is good to know some of the customs; because if you are at the wrong place at the wrong time or do something normal to you here at home that is not usual there, you might have a problem.

Easter Island, Aitutaki, Tahiti, Bora Bora is Polynesia and calls to me. So I looked into David Stanley's Tahiti. Wow! I like travel books usually, but this one I love and will keep. It is so much better than American versions and compares well with the 1952 French travel book on Egypt that I treasure. And if you travel to Tahiti on a good budget due to Stanley's Tahiti and meet any Freelands, they are my cousins.
