After watching and listening to the birds and telling them good morning, she watches her foster sister, Margot, as she rushes back into the bedroom to get her shoes. Another school day loomed before her as she thought of the day's test. She dressed and headed into the kitchen for breakfast.
Forgetting about her thirteenth birthday until her mom mentions it, Miranda does not want a party. All she wants to do is ride her favorite horse, Starlight, or help her friend, Christopher Bergman.
Miranda's problems start to mount up as the story deepens. In chapter two, she is afraid for her dad. She springs into action, cueing Starlight to the raging river, after a heavy rain storm. Thinking her dad is lost, she begins to franticly search for him and his four-wheeler.
Suddenly more problems occur. Miranda thinks everyone has turned against her, even her best friend. The only true friend she has is, Starlight. Will he betray her too? In chapter three, Miranda urges Starlight toward the edge of the river to swim to the other side. The horse does not want to go. Pushing him forward with her body, the grip of her thighs, and her hands on his neck, she begs him onward. Starlight jumps off the bank and disappears into the murky water.
Janet Muirhead Hill, author of Starlight Comes Home, is a wonderful writer of children's books. She shows it through her characters. She not only brings Miranda, Chris, Laurie, and especially, Starlight, to life, she also fills each chapter with action and suspense. Janet Muirhead Hill deserves a thumbs up, plus a high five, for the hard work that has been put into this heart-felt book. Not only is Starlight Comes Home an awesome page turner, but it is also a very enjoyable read. Excitement jumped from every page. Starlight Comes Home is recommended for all teenagers. | | |
