In post-World War I Washington, D.C., Alessandra O'Quinn has it all. Rich, beautiful, from an old American family, and married to a powerful legislator, Ali is given one more thing...a death sentence by her doctor...tuberculosis. Forced by her husband and father to move to an artist colony in Taos, New Mexico, for treatment, she discovers a brand new world--one where nature and humankind combine in a timeless dance.

In the nearby pueblo, she meets Manuel Mondragon (Bear Heart), a shaman who shows her how to heal her soul so she can heal her body. But she also shows Man that in doing his duty to his people, he has lost touch with his own needs. With Man's help, Ali reconnects with life and the planet that nurtures her. And together, they experience a brief love affair that transcends time, space, and cultural differences before duty once again interferes.

Ms. Bonds has a remarkable gift for crafting characters with which the reader can empathize. At the beginning, Alessandra is not an admirable woman. She has allowed the men in her life to steal her emotional strength. But as she heals physically and mentally, she remembers how to fight for what she wants. We see our heroine use the remarkable people around her to rebuild her life from the ground up. Then she uses the lessons she has learned in a battle to protect the rights of the New Mexican pueblos against a federal government who has everything but has lost its national soul.

Lightly blended with a glimpse into a little known time period, strong dialogue, and realistic settings, Ms. Bonds has written a wonderful tale of discovery. This isn't the usual "rite of passage" book. None of the characters are all bad or all good. Some relationships are gained and some are lost. And, there isn't always the happy ending. But it is a story that stays long in the reader's mind...and soul. When The Heart Is Right is a must read for every modern woman who thinks she has it all yet feels she has lost her identity. Definitely a book to keep. Thank you, Ms. Bonds.
