Fred Saberhagen is a spectacular author who has written many novels including the Dracula series and the Berserker series. His latest series is the Book of the Gods. In this series Saberhagen creates fabulous tales surrounding the Greek Gods.

The Face of Apollo (Book I) The Face of Apollo is the first book in Saberhagen’s series. In this novel Saberhagen explores the possibility of the ongoing existence of the Greek Gods. He explores this existence through masks that give the wearer the properties of that God. In the first book, an unsuspecting laborer, Jeremy Redthorn, discovers the Mask of Apollo. Wearing Apollo’s mask at first seems like a wondrous proposition. However, it also brings the responsibilities of being a God. Those responsibilities include protecting Apollo’s followers and protecting the world from gods who have chosen an evil path. Jeremy will have to discover if he has what it takes to fill Apollo’s shoes.

Ariadne’s Web (Book II) In the second book of the God series, Saberhagen focuses on Ariadne and Theseus. Ariadne is the daughter of the famous King Minos of Crete. Her brother is only half man. While trying to promote himself to god level, her bother’s plan backfires and he becomes the Minotaur. The stage is set for a breathtaking tale filled with dramatic characters. Ariadne falls deeply in love with Theseus. The problem is that Theseus has already been condemned to death as a sacrifice to the Gods. Ariadne conspires to save Theseus but Dionysus shows up to complicate matters. Ariadne must find a way to deal with Dionysus and save Theseus.

The Arms of Hercules (Book III) From Apollo in the first book to Hercules in the third, Saberhagen continues to deliver strong characters. In the Arms of Hercules, Saberhagen tells the story from the first point of view. In fact, it is Hercules’ point of view. Hercules is the son of the King of the Gods, Zeus and a beautiful human woman, Alcmene. Saberhagen provides many challenges for Hercules to overcome. The final challenge will leave you on the edge of your seat. Hercules must fight the ultimate opponent, Death.

All of the Gods in Saberhagen’s series are vividly brought to life. Each novel builds on the stories of the Gods through Saberhagen’s imagination. The novels are unique and weave the tales of fascinating gods. You can’t help but be drawn into Saberhagen’s world of the gods. This series is a success and if you read one you will quickly want to read all of the god books.
