Janissa is a Witch a fact that she had kept hidden until the day she felt compelled to help a child in distress, she could not ignore his plight; to help him she would have to reveal her magic, a fact she had kept hidden until now.

Janissa had lived quietly with her companion Flame, who has been with her since childhood and if she used her powers she was sure to be separated from Flame.  However, her compassion for a little boy in distress led to her capture, imprisonment and a sentence of death.

As she awaited the first beat of the whip, a stranger rode up, he declared himself to be Lord Stephan a messenger sent by his king to escort Janissa to the palace to answer charges of spying.  Because of past experiences Lord Stephan disliked Witch's with a passion and he made no effort to hide his apathy from her.

On their journey Lord Stephan initially gave Janissa a hard time, making her walk behind him while he rode a horse, in fact he was generally unpleasant.  Through it all she was able to retain her generous nature remaining strong in the face of so much hostility.

As they battled against the elements and marauding animals the two would get to know each other uniting to fight the dangers. With Stephan's encouragement Janissa's confidence in her magic grows and she eventually gains her full powers.

This book is definitely a keeper, Janissa and Stephan love will keep you turning the pages, it's as great read. It is about two people whose warmth and compassion overcome their emotional scares becoming a strong and abiding love for each other.
