Pay attention to who publishes a book -- and any imprint that indicates who edits the line.  Chances are good if you like a book from a given publisher/line, you will like other books from that line.  And chances are even better you'd be able to sell a book to that editor.

Student writers who hate Romance should at the very least read this book's reviews then the sample pages posted.  Analyze this book, reduce it to its components and you'll find the underlying formula.  Once you have that formula, translate it into your own favorite genre and as an exercise write an identical book -- make sure to adhere to chapter length, sentence length and vocabulary patterns.
