| The two main protagonists in this series, Lyle
Odirin and the Kethsem Aborigine Yran meet when Yran is assigned to
Odirin as his apprentice Boxmaster.
Yran is the first non-human to complete the Guild Academy training and be assigned as an Apprentice Boxmaster. Odirin has lost a Box and is determined to find out why, against his superior's orders. Odirin is convinced his Box was lost as a result of enemy action. Yran -- or any Apprentice -- is an obstacle in his way. But he sets out to train Yran and get him through the process of cutting Shard. Because of Yran's species, culture, gender and personal attitude, he appears to Odirin to be childish, immature, dishonest and naive -- wholly unsuited to a Boxmaster's responsibilities. Nothing could be farther from the truth -- but it takes a lot to convince Odirin of that. See Chapter One. |
