Progressive Rock

by L Bruce Gray

Featured Work

Minimum - Maximum

by Kraftwerk

Very unusual electronic masterpieces - live.

Millions Now Living Will Never Die

by Tortoise

Totally Instrumental Band - Give it more than one turn on the CD player.
TNT

by Tortoise

Pure sonic explosions.
Fragile

by Yes

Almost everyone has heard "Roundabout" - it's one of the rare Progressive Rock tunes that cracked the top 40.
Close to the Edge

by Yes

This is Yes at the height of their rule of the Progressive Rock scene.
Brain Salad Surgery

by Emerson Lake & Palmer

One of the best Emerson Lake and Palmer albums.
Welcome Back My Friends

by Emerson Lake & Palmer

There's nothing like a live album to bring out the very best of a great group. This 2 CD set is EL&P at their pinnacle.
Six Wives of Henry VIII

by Rick Wakeman

Rick Wakeman's first solo album was released during his first tenure with Yes.
Journey to the Center of the Earth

by Rick Wakeman

Absolutely Wakeman's best solo work.
In the Court of the Crimson King

by King Crimson

King Crimson was the "father" of Progresive Rock.
In the Wake of Poseidon

by King Crimson

I think this is King Crimson at its finest.
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

by Godspeed You Black Emperor

This deserves a lot more exposure in the Prog Rock field.
The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place

by Explosions in the Sky

If you like Godspeed, try Explosions.
Starcastle

by Starcastle

This virtually unknown American group provided a link between Yes and future Progressive Rock groups.
Fountains of Light

by Starcastle

If you liked the debut album you'll love their best.
Infinite

by Stratovarius

Check out the 8th release by Stratovarius. Sort of a cross between symphonic sound and speed metal.
Snow

by Spock's Beard

Spock's Beard is one of the better bands recording modern Progressive rock.
Bridge Across Forever

by Transatlantic

Well worth listening to Transatlantic's modern Fusion/Progressive Rock mix.
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

by Dream Theater

Dream Theater's 2 disc set. All of disc 2 is almost a rock opera in the neo-progressive style.
Stardust We Are

by The Flower Kings

This 2 disc set is the very best Flower Kings album available.
Live From Oz

by Planet X

I still say live albums show the very best of a band. And this is the best of Planet X so far.
In Absentia

by Porcupine Tree

Porcupine Tree is sort of like Post-Modern King Crimson.
Raising the Mammoth

by Explorers Club

Explorer's Club explores new heights of Prog Rock.
Ice Cycles

by Platypus

Platypus is a side project that sounds like a main affair.
Space Rituals

by Hawkwind

Want to hear Heavy Metal on the edge of Space?

A Short Biography of Bruce Gray

Who am I?

I'm Bruce Gray - an old hand at Progressive Rock. I'm married - have been for over 25 years. I have a daughter and a cat. I'm really into role-playing games and other gaming. I'm an original Trekker and love SF&F. I started with the early years of Yes and Emerson Lake and Palmer and have continued through to such groups as Spock's Beard and Planet X. I was a "roadie" once for Rick Wakeman during his "Journey to the Center of the Earth" tour.
