About Ronnie Bob Whitaker:

I actually started "volunteering" before the Sime~Gen site started. I enjoyed the books so much, I had actually scanned them in and turned them into electronic form before even meeting Jacqueline Lichtenberg (and I still haven't met Jean Lorrah). After introducing my friend to the series, I decided to actually write to the PO Box and was welcomed by Kerry Lindemann-Schaefer. She indicated that there was a science fiction convention close to the area that Jacqueline usually attended and invited me there. That was my first Darkover and I've been going since. I also ordered the fanzines and scanned them in, and when the site started operation, I had material ready to be posted for those who would sign the agreements. Having the books in electronic form allowed the reprint process to be a lot easier as well.

Welcome to our volunteer spotlight of Ronnie Bob Whitaker.

Below is an interview I had with Ronnie Bob Whitaker.

Elizabeth:Since joining what have your learned?

RBW:I've met lots of nice people and enjoyed the list discussions for the most part.

Elizabeth:How does your Sime~Gen skills affect your work?

RBW:Actually, it was my work skills (in computer science) that I offered to Sime~Gen, and I continue to do so as I expand my skills.

Elizabeth:What kind of 'hats' do you handle?

RBW:Currently, I send the welcome letters to all of the students who join the Professional Writing School, I act as a back up keeper of the Founding 400 database and write a message to all new members asking if they would like to be put on the Fans of JL list, which I maintain. I also help with any database projects which JL might have.

Elizabeth:  What is your most current project?

RBW:My long term project is to turn the old manuscripts which I obtained from JL into electronic form. I also have some Kraith Manuscripts of stories which were never published that I'm turning into electronic form.

Elizabeth:  How did volunteering help you?

RBW:I enjoy helping to make the work of the JL's available to more people.

Elizabeth:  Who did you meet?

RBW:I've gotten to meet in person Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Margaret Carter, Karen MacLeod and Kerry Lindemann-Schaefer who were all involved with S~G and many others of less reknown.

Elizabeth:  Make lasting friendships with?

RBW:A lasting friendship with Karen MacLeod at the very least and certainly some long time friends from afar.
