About Laurraine Tutihasi

“I have been a science fan since 1973.  I've been reading science fiction or fantasy most of my life.  I contacted fandom in late 1973 and haven in touch since.  I have been a member of a local science fiction club since 1974.  I have been attending science fiction conventions since 1973.  In the mid-1970's, I reviewed books for two reviewzines.  I started publishing my own zine in 1976.  I've been a member of one or more apas since 1974.

“In my mundane life, I have been a librarian and a programmer.  Now, I am trying to launch a career as a freelance copyeditor, editor, proofreader and word processor.  I've been married since 1999.  I grew up in Japan and the Northeast.  I went to college in Minnesota and England.  I received my graduate degree in North Carolina.  I have been living in Southern California since 1983.”

Welcome to our volunteer spotlight of Laurraine Tutihasi.

Below is an interview I had with Laurraine.

Elizabeth:  What influenced your decision to volunteer at Sime~Gen Universe?

Laurraine:  I had been unable to work a regular job for several months due to health.

However, I felt that my health had improved enough that I could handle something that required a few hours of work each month.  Since I would be working from home, I could choose my own hours and work around any health problems or doctor appointments.

Elizabeth:  Since joining, what have you learned?

Laurraine:  I have learned, as I had expected, that I enjoy editing type work.

Elizabeth:  How does your Sime~Gen skills effect your work?

Laurraine:  My Sime~Gen work is my work, at least for the moment.

Elizabeth:  What kind of 'hats' do you handle?

Laurraine:  I currently edit the PERSPECTIVES newsletter, which is distributed by e-mail and on the web.

Elizabeth:  What is you most current project?

Laurraine:  Helping Carol is my most current project, but there is always a new issue of PERSPECTIVES to prepare.

Elizabeth:  How did volunteering help?

Laurraine:  It gave me something to do that was not entirely just for myself and helps to keep me in contact with other fans.

Elizabeth:  Whom did you meet? Make lasting friendships with?

Laurraine:  I'm not sure I met any new people, but I have come to know some people better.

Elizabeth:  What are your accomplishments?

Laurraine:  I updated the Perspectives page on the web when I started editing the newsletter and have kept it updated to within a month of the last newsletter.
