Eric Berlin, aka ECJB

About Eric Berlin:

“I've not been around as long as many here — only since just before 1970.  I'll be 34 two days before Christmas in 2003.

“I have lived in (counting on fingers) in eight states (not counting the ones of mind), but have moved more often than that.  The longest I have lived in any house is three years.

“I grew up on the old "Star Trek" and reading various science-fiction mags, such as Omni.  I have the misfortune of never having been able to attend a science fiction convention, although I've read about them, and dreampt of swimming in the sea of alien life forms I would be likely to encounter.

“I don't have "a day job."  I just find a hole and fill it — that seems to be the predominant theme of my life.  I have a variety of talents, but am, as the saying goes, a "Jack of all trades, master of none."

“I have never been (legally) married, though in other senses of the word, ... that's another story.

“Essentially, there is nothing more unique or special about me than there is about anyone else; I just happened to fall into the "Sime~Gen Universe" gravity well.  Here I am...”

Welcome to our volunteer spotlight of Eric Berlin.

Below is an interview I had with Eric.

Elizabeth:  What influenced your decision to volunteer at Sime~Gen Universe?

Eric:  See that last line for details.

Elizabeth:  Since joining, what have you learned?

Eric:  Hm.  About "Life, the Universe, and Everything," my ongoing study, or something else in particular?

I am in a constant struggle to learn more about the world around me, how I interact in it, my relationship to God, how I relate to Him, and a thousand other questions that have been asked since people first walked on the Earth.

I've also been trying to improve my web and computer skills, since that is at what I seem to be the best.

Elizabeth:  How does your Sime~Gen skills effect your work?

Eric:  If I had a "day job," there might be a conflict from time to time.  However, the conflict ends up being whether or not I am mentally and physically up to the task(s).

Elizabeth:  What kind of 'hats' do you handle?

Eric:  I build and repair web pages.  I do image editing, create banners, and the like.  (Pauses for thought, smoke is seen rising out of his left ear...)  I guess that's about it.  I don't have a nameplate that says a name and title — I just get called on to do things for which I have talent.

Elizabeth:  What is you most current project?

Eric:  Most recently I did three or four banners and buttons for the carousels.

Elizabeth:  How did volunteering help?

Eric:  If I did not have some way of being useful, it would drive me nuts.

Elizabeth:  Whom did you meet?  Make lasting friendships with?

Eric:  Karen L. MacLeod and I became friends because I needed a ride to A.R.C.H. (Atlantic Riding Center for the Handicapped) to volunteer, she lived nearby, and she could take me.  I was volunteering there working with the horses and managing Sue Adams' badly neglected and mismanaged computer.  From there, Karen told me about the S~G novels, and I read them.  Then I started to meet people online.  Here I am.

Elizabeth:  What are your accomplishments?

Eric:  Nothing in particular to speak of.  I was in the National Honor Society in high school, got a 1440 on my SATs, won a swim meet in high school, and it's been pretty much all downhill from there.
