About Carol Castellanos:

“I live in Pennsylvania, and am a mother of 4.  One of my daughters is married and lives in Georgia.  I have a day job as well as doing my volunteer work at Sime~Gen.  I collect vampire books, of which I have approximately 500 at last count.  I collect adult porcelain dolls; the more risqué the better.  I have two cats and two pet snakes.  I have loved snakes since I was a child, but my mother never let me have one.  About 3-4 years ago my boyfriend bought me a baby Columbian boa that was ill and died.  We were then given a Central American boa in her place named Diamond.  Diamond is my baby, even though she has had babies of her own.  In total, Diamond is approximately 6 feet long.  We kept one of Diamond's babies and now only have her and her baby.  We gave the father to a good home.”

Welcome to our volunteer spotlight of Carol Castellanos.

Below is an interview I had with Carol.

Elizabeth:  What influenced your decision to volunteer at Sime~Gen Universe?

Carol:  I originally volunteered to do book reviews at another site.  I can't exactly remember how I ended up at Sime~Gen from there.  I then went from reviewer to uploading reviews.  From there Sime~Gen gave me thechance to work on other columns.

Elizabeth:  Since joining, what have you learned?

Carol:  How to make web page backgrounds thanks to Patric, the webmaster here.  I've learned there's a lot more to learn. I've also learned that I love meeting the authors and doing the reviews I do.  I've also learned it is time to try my hand at writing the stories I have been keeping in my head.

Elizabeth:  How does your Sime~Gen skills effect your work?

Carol: If you mean at Sime~Gen, my skills have allowed me to learn even more skills.  They have also afforded me the chance to learn what I would really love to do for a living.  If you mean at my day job, nothing other than it's not the kind of job I want to do forever.  My day job is very different from Sime~Gen job.

Elizabeth:  What kind of 'hats' do you handle?

Carol:  Officially, I now wear two.  Vampire Reviews (although it's no longer strictly vampires anymore).  Columnist and Author Spotlights Coordinator and Interviewer.  Unofficially, I tend to help where I can when I have time.  Although that hasn't been much lately.  I have in the past, been a reviews uploader and Romance Site Coordinator as well as teaching others how to upload and post reviews.

Elizabeth:  What is you most current project?

Carol:  Well, I just launched my newest spotlights section.  Authors Are People Too!!!  Two of my favorite authors gave me the idea.  It seems a lot of us forget authors have families, day jobs and the same trials and tribulations as the rest of us.

Elizabeth:  How did volunteering help?

Carol:  Its given me the confidence to begin my own writing.  In addition, I have had the chance to make some very nice online friendships with authors I may never have met otherwise.

Elizabeth:  Whom did you meet?

Carol:  Well, I've met quite a few people at Sime~Gen like Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Karen MacLeod, and Patric, our webmaster, has helped me quite a bit along the way.

Elizabeth:  Make lasting friendships with?

Carol:  Since I've only been here a few years, lasting relationship wise, you will have to ask me in another few years.
